If you have multiple Windows XP accounts in your computer & you only use one account now, you can configure Windows XP to automatically login. Using auto logon makes your computer more easy to use & faster to load, which I believe will increase your productivity. The drawback is that this method can pose a security risk. The danger is that computers with automatic logon enabled will allow anyone with substantial access to the computer to gain access to everything stored on that computer, including network or networks that the computer is connected to.

This works with:

In addition, if you turn on automatic logon, the password is stored in the registry in plain text. The specific registry key that stores this value is remotely readable by the Authenticated Users group.

To find this key, perform this action:

1. Start/Run/Regedit, and then locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\

WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

For that reason, only use this setting if the computer is safe from people who you do not trust.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Click Start, Run and enter "control userpasswords2" to open the Windows 2000-style User Accounts application.

2. On the Users tab, clear (remove the check from) the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start your computer. Then click OK.

For Example:

User name: verve

Password: mastermind

Confirm Password: mastermind

More information:

If you want to bypass the automatic logon to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows XP restarts. Keep in mind that this method applies only to the first logon. To enforce this setting for future logoffs, the administrator must set the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Value:ForceAutoLogon

Type: REG_SZ

Data: 1
