Desktop Tab Missing? I will show you how to fix and restore display properties of missing desktop tabs!
Does this sound like a problem you have? “I had some spyware on my comp, and cleaned with anti spyware and virus scanners but I cant change my background wallpaper. When I go to display settings, all I have is screen saver and settings tabs, the others are not there. Can anyone help me get my other tabs back?”
Well I had a similar experience. I was on one of my new workstations when I noticed my desktop tab missing from display properties and I could no longer change the wallpaper.
Opening my desktop properties by right clicking the desktop I noticed the desktop tab is missing from the display properties so I did a bit of research and trial and error and came to a solution that should help thousands of people out. To restore your desktop display settings and restore the desktop tabs missing just follow along with my instructions below.
Please leave feedback if this has helped you, thanks
INSTRUCTIONS
- Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
- Use your search tool to find “Restore All Display Tabs”
- Download the file from that link “restorealldisplaytabs.reg” and save to desktop.
- Run “restorealldisplaytabs.reg” and select yes to add the information to registry.
- Go back to your desktop display properties and you can see your tabs again, but wait its not over yet!
- Set your display settings back to whatever it was before and click OK.
- Go to “start> run” type in “msconfig” and press enter.
- Go to the “startup tab.” Remove any startup item that has text under “startup item” that looks like gibberish, similar to the wallpaper name text that was taking over your desktop. Example: “phclgqj0e12v.” Uncheck the square next to the name to disable it, then click OK.
- You will get a message that pops up about restarting, make sure you close any programs & save all work then click on “restart.”
- When you restart a message may popup about the settings you chose, select “don’t show this message again.”
Now everything should be working smoothly! It did for me

What Should I do to Protect My Computer?
Regularly make sure your operating system and software applications have all critical updates and security fixes.
Under no circumstances should you ever open an unexpected or suspicious looking email attachment even if it appears to be from someone you know.
Use a good firewall to manage the activity between your computer and the internet. I personally use Zone Alarm.
You should also have an antivirus program, Zone Alarm Suite comes with one built in. There is a free antivirus called AVG as well. Which ever anti-virus software you use make sure it is set it up to check for the latest anti-virus updates (sometimes called definitions) on a regular basis.
You also should guard against spyware or malware. This is software which can come bundled with other products, install without your knowledge and be a drain on your system’s resources. Useful tools in this area include: Ad-Aware and Spybot.
Top 5 Antivirus Programs
- Zone Alarm Suite
- Kaspersky Anti-Virus
- ESET NOD32
- AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0
- Norton AntiVirus 2008
Top 5 Firewall Programs
Bottom line though I recommend Zone Alarm Suite, It has a combination of top of the line antivirus protection plus top quality firewall, mail protection and more! I use it on my other computers and recommend it to friends family and colleagues.

I use Nod32 right now and Avira not so long ago. Are you sure Zone Alarm is way better than what I am using?
Thanks for commenting Bryan :), Nod32 is another good antivirus program as I stated in my top 5, but so far for a balance of good protection and usability I recommend Zone Alarm Suite.
I know many people I have recommended Zone Alarm to hate it, but that’s because they messed up their settings “experimenting” by enabling internet lock and other things and didnt know what they did wrong
One thing I don’t like about Zone Alarm is that sometimes it can be frustrating using it with certain FTP software.
Hello, thank you for taking time to comment on my blog. :o) Are you considering offering your blog updates by email? :o) Happy Holidays!
I sort of like an anti-virus called DriveSentry. It’s not for everyone, but it’s free and offers full virus protecttion, although not without some bugs. Why pay people to enumerate alllll the bad stuff out there when you can just tell your anti virus to run these 5 programs, and absolutely nothing else?
Thanks Mikazo! I will have to look into that program
Babette thanks for stopping by and commenting as well
I offer blog updates by email, at the very top of each post below the title, the box with the dashed lines holds the link to subscribe by email
Ooops! LOL Thanks. :o) I was so used to seeing it on the sidebar on most blogs. It’s obvious I didn’t read that dashed box but I did read the whole article though. LOL
Hey no problem Babette
You gave me an idea that I should create a sidebar image with it as well since its a common location
Thanks for reading the article
LOL
The file restored my desktop tab, but I couldn’t find any startup files meeting the description.
Thanks!
@Lorrie: I am glad I could help!
Thanks for leaving a comment!
thanks for the help much satisfied!
Thanks for the help. The missing tabs were driving me nuts. Pretty much everything under the Startup was gibberish to me but nothing looked as bad as the example you gave so I left everything checked. Thanks again.
