Want to watch video on your Nintendo DS easily?
I will show you how to convert and watch video on your Nintendo DS easily with freeware!
Even though you will use a freeware program to convert video to watch on your Nintendo DS. You will need a special “Adapter” to watch video on your Nintendo DS.
1 component needed to watch video on your Nintendo DS is an adapter called the CycloDS Evolution. At the time I was researching which was the best, based on my research this one was it!
I purchased mine in 2007 from a company called “Realhotstuff” which had a really weird name that seemed like it sold “other” items that you find in say a bedroom, if you know what I mean, LMAO! But after reading how many people purchased theirs from Realhotstuff and checking their reviews on Resellerratings.com I gave it a go.
Here is my receipt:
Date Ordered: Wednesday 28 November, 2007
1 x CycloDS Evolution (cy_evo) = $88.00
memory card Kingston 2 GB microSD (Japan)
Discount Coupon rhs07 applied: -$4.40
DHL Express (1 x 1lbs) (Second Day Service (2nd business day by 5 PM)): $16.53
The reason for the “Kingston 2 GB microSD (Japan)” is that the Japanese version of the microSD reads and writes faster than it being made from another region. I haven’t done any extensive test on this LMAO! I know that it just works great! It also comes with a USB adapter to plug into your computer to transfer files to and from your DS such as videos!
The 2nd component needed to watch video on your Nintendo DS is a freeware program to convert the video from popular formats such as AVI, MOV, MPG, WMV and etc! The program that will convert the video to watch video on your Nintendo DS is called “SUPER ©” (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer) and you can find it here. BUT WAIT! Before you go trying to download this thing its tricky so you will have to watch the video and see how to download it as hassle free as possible, LMAO!
If your CycloDS Evolution isn’t loaded with it, you will need to download a free program to load on it called Moonshell The page I linked to even has a handy video on how to install and run it on your Nintendo DS
The last component to watch video on your Nintendo DS is a video! LOL! I just downloaded some movie trailers for this example
Well lets get right to it with the instructions below. Please leave feedback if this has helped you, thanks
- Have a DS adapter like CycloDS Evolution which can be purchased here, then if its not already on the microSD card, you will need to load Moonshell on it, link shows video on how to install it
- Download and install the freeware video converter SUPER. Watch the video on how to navigate the site to download the program and avoid frustration, LOL.
- Once you have SUPER running. In the drop down menu under “Select The Output Container” choose “Nintendo - DS” .
- Follow the video in its entirety to select the optimal settings to convert your video for clarity on your Nintendo DS.
- Transfer the converted video to your microDS card.
- Put microDS card into CycloDS Evolution adapter.
- Start up your Nintendo DS ( In my video I show you how to navigate Moonshell and you see me playing a video on my Zelda Edition Nintendo DS ) and navigate in Moonshell to watch video on your Nintendo DS. All done
Now you can watch video on the go! Not only can you watch video, but you now have a "Portable Media Player" where you can watch video, view images, play games, read text and listen to music! How awesome is that?!

A portable media player (PMP) is a consumer electronics device that is capable of storing and playing digital media. The data is typically stored on a hard drive, microdrive, or flash memory (as used by the CycloDS Evolution that inserts into your Nintendo DS).
Portable Media Player’s are capable of playing digital audio, images, and video. Some players have the option of including the ability to record video. Some players include readers for memory cards, which are advertised to accessorize players with extra storage or transferring media. In some players, features of a personal organizer are emulated, or support for games like the Nintendo DS, or the PlayStation Portable, is included.
Nearly all players are compatible with the MP3 audio format, and many others support Windows Media Audio (WMA), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and WAV. Some players are compatible with open-source formats like Ogg Vorbis and the Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC). Nintendo DS plays back MP3 via Moonshell
Most newer players support the MPEG-4 video format, and many other players are compatible with Windows Media Video (WMV) and AVI, now mostly used as a container format. Recently, more and more players are enabling compatibility to the DivX video format and its open-source parallel, Xvid. Software included with the players may be able to convert video files into a compatible format. Nintendo DS allows you to watch videos by converting video into the DPG format via SUPER © and watching it on the Nintendo DS via Moonshell.
